Don't count your chickens 'til the fat lady sings

Mrs Malaprop is rightly famous for being the pineapple of using a wrong word with a sound resembling the right one.

But even she didn't use malaphors (a blend of 'malapropism' and 'metaphor') where you take two common sayings and smash them together to make..... well, something new, like the title of this piece.

If you're confused at this point, that's good because you get to share a little of the feeling the BGiE team had that traveled to St Albans this week for another in our series of club head to heads.

Long story short, we left at the end of the evening believing we had won and woke up the next day to learn we hadn't. We live in the age of VAR (video assistant referee) in football and DRS (decision review system) in cricket - and so it is now in backgammon too. There's no name for it in backgammon yet. We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

That all said, we did have a really enjoyable evening at St Albans - thanks to Tim Spring, Chris Purchase and all the St Albans players. And thanks to the 13 BGiE players that traveled and especially Gavin Anderson for all the organising and Martin Sher for winning all 3 of his matches.

This week also saw the April Grand Prix tournaments played on Monday evening back at home - the F1 was won by Tariq Siddiqi and the F2 by Harvey Kass, both with 4 wins in 4 matches. Congratulations to them and thanks to everyone that turned out to play.

Next Monday is Easter Monday - by that point there should be no more (Easter) eggs or chickens left to count, so why not come and play backgammon? Hope to see you there - you can sign up now for our regular £10 Swiss.

If that isn't enough, there's also the April £50 knockout next Wednesday evening - sign up for that here.
